I am disappointed in my church – the Anglican Church of Canada – for failing to pass the canon allowing same-sex marriage ceremonies.
In an age when the Church is facing extinction, when we all need spiritual guidance, this was their chance to proudly lead the way to acceptance and love for all of God’s creations. People abandon religion because it has not been allowed to breathe and grow like science. Christianity (among other monotheistic religions) shackled itself to The Word of God as interpreted and recorded By Mankind (and I am being generous by adding kind).
But did they get it right? What if they didn’t?
Blasphemy, you say? It is blasphemous to misrepresent the Word of God. We have been told to love one another… but only if they aren’t <insert your choice of bigotry>? That is not the message Christ shared.
Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
He didn’t say “but not if he’s gay”.
1 John 4:8 “Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
Practice what you preach.
As reported today in the Anglican Journal: Resolution A052-R2 to amend the marriage canon, as put forward at General Synod 2019, served as the second reading for the amendment following a first reading at General Synod 2016. The resolution declared that Canon XXI, On Marriage in the Church, “applies to all persons who are duly qualified by civil law to enter into marriage.” It would have changed the wording of the canon to replace all references to “man and woman” and “husband and wife” with “the parties to the marriage.”
There is still time for them to reverse this decision. If you read the article, they left the door open to revisit the “If there are proposals for revisiting the matter, there are provisions for how to deal with that”
Marriage canon amendment fails to pass at General Synod
Make yourself heard before the General Synod ends on July 16th. Call/Email/Write/Twitter/Facebook/Letter to the Editor/Parade/ and let them know the world wants the Anglican Church to head the movement in equality for all.
Pierre Elliot Trudeau famously said: ” There’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.” Justin, the church needs to stay out of them, as well.
I’m going to Church tomorrow… but not just to pray. To vote.
Be the change.
