Are you familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?
These are the basic needs of humans, teetering on a pyramid.
If you don’t have the foundation … these fundamental Physiological needs of air, food, water, shelter, clothing and sleep, you can’t fully realize the next level of needs. They are required for human survival and without them … we die.
Once those vital needs are met, only then can we move up in the hierarchy to Safety and Security … other essential needs for life. If we can breathe, drink, eat and sleep somewhere, then our safety takes precedence and dominates our behaviour. In the absence of physical safety people will experience post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma.
That’s where my life was disrupted and fell apart. No stability. No safety. Adrift.
Health – Cancer
Employment – Long-term-disability in a highly fluid, shrinking and stressful industry.
Financial – Still supporting my family on my own.
Property – Rental which is being pulled out from under us.
Family – None to depend on, except my 20-year-old son Matt.
Social Stability – Ahem.
As my personal well-being and security was stripped away, my anxiety ramped up. With no one to turn to, no Plan B, no safety net, the fear overwhelmed me. My stalwart resiliency cracked.
I hit my breaking point.
Makes perfect sense when I look at it this way.
I just have to redefine my security as internal versus external. Very difficult when you are unstable on all four legs, but I have to dig deep and give it another try.
